New Jersey annual registration guide

New Jersey charity registration renewal

New Jersey renewals are due six months after fiscal year end and must be filed through the current NJ Charities Portal. The practical work is selecting CRI-200 or CRI-300R from gross contributions and fundraiser facts, applying the current audit rule, attaching the correct federal filing, paying the contribution-based fee, and saving portal proof.

Select CRI-200 or CRI-300R from the completed year

Reported factsRenewal pathPlanning note
Gross contributions of $25,000 or less and no disqualifying fundraiser factCRI-200 short formThe regulator also identifies a short-form path for bona fide veterans' organizations.
Gross contributions over $25,000CRI-300R long formUse the reported fiscal year's contribution data, not the current budget.
Contract with a professional fund raiser during the reported yearCRI-300R long formThe fundraiser fact can require the long form even if contributions are lower.
$10,000 or less and considering the statutory registration exemptionExemption analysis before renewalThe current guidance limits the option and does not extend it to organizations using a professional fundraiser.

Do not confuse gross contributions, total revenue, and the audit calculation. New Jersey uses gross contributions for the form and fee bands. The live agency page describes a separate audit trigger based on qualifying monetary contributions. Reconcile each measure to the federal return and supporting ledger before entering the portal.

Calculate the deadline and extension as New Jersey dates

The annual renewal is due six months after fiscal year end. A December 31 year end therefore produces a June 30 renewal date. New Jersey says extension requests can only be filed through the NJ Charities Portal. Eligible, compliant charities with more than $10,000 in gross contributions must submit the request by the original renewal deadline.

Federal-extension trap: an IRS extension alone is not recognized as a New Jersey charity-renewal extension. File the separate state request in the portal and keep its confirmation. Organizations at or below the portal's eligibility rules may need to file by the original date instead.

A renewal filed after its due date carries a $25 late fee in addition to the registration fee. Do not wait for an email reminder to establish the deadline; calendar from the fiscal year end and verify the portal record.

Use the current 2026 audit rule, not an older PDF threshold

The live New Jersey registration-information page states that a long-form filer with more than $1,000,000 in monetary contributions during the reported fiscal year must submit a certified audit. It excludes one-time bequests, contributions received solely for capital projects, and qualifying mission-related in-kind contributions from that trigger calculation. The regulator says a required audit cannot be waived.

Older New Jersey PDFs and archived pages can display earlier $500,000 audit language. The live page was updated in 2026. Use the current portal instructions and statute for the reporting year, document the contribution calculation and any exclusions, and obtain professional guidance when the classification is uncertain.

Prepare the renewal packet before entering the portal

Identity and registration

Confirm the legal name, EIN, New Jersey charity number, fiscal period, addresses, officers, solicitation names, and registration status.

Financial support

Reconcile gross contributions, total revenue, program and fundraising data, the IRS Form 990 or 990-EZ when required, and the certified audit when triggered.

Fundraiser records

Inventory professional fund raiser and fund-raising counsel contracts, state registrations, contract filing dates, and campaign reports.

Certification and payment

Route the portal certification to two officers and use the contribution band to approve the online fee before submission.

The current fee schedule is $30 for CRI-200 filers, $60 for long-form filers with $25,001 to $100,000 in gross contributions, $150 from $100,001 through $500,000, and $250 above $500,000. Fees are based on gross contributions, not total gross revenue. Online filing accepts major credit cards without a separate service fee according to the live guidance.

Submit through the correct portal and prove acceptance

  1. Use the current Charities Portal at charportal.dca.njoag.gov; the agency says the prior portal URL is inactive.
  2. Confirm that the account is linked to the correct charity record before starting the renewal.
  3. Enter the reconciled year, complete every required response, upload the correct attachments, and review the certification page.
  4. Pay the registration fee and late fee if due, then save the confirmation number, payment receipt, filed answers, uploaded documents, and certification.
  5. Monitor portal messages and the public directory until the renewal status reflects the agency's outcome. Keep any deficiency request and the response in the same evidence file.

Should a charity use CRI-200 or CRI-300R?
